WILLOUGHBY
AVENUE LOFTS

\ ARCHITECT

Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects

\ LOCATION

West Hollywood, CA

\ SCOPE

10,600 SF lot to be developed into eight (8) for-sale loft style condominium units. The site of the project is an area zoned for medium density growth. Within this context, it becomes increasingly difficult to ensure that existing views, adjacencies and open spaces will be preserved into the future. In order to exert some measure of control and continued usability, exterior spaces were brought inside the individual units. These open spaces, conceived of as outdoor rooms, funnel large amounts of daylight to the interior and can be used as extensions of adjacent living spaces, private gardens or outdoor patios.

The landscape design style is contemporary, featuring a combination of landscaped and hardscaped berms, boldly contrasting paving patterns, and large swaths of architectural plants such as barrel cacti, Agaves and bamboos. The City of West Hollywood has stringent water use restrictions, so drought-tolerant succulents and cacti were used extensively in the planting plan. Featured hardscape materials are certified wood decking, and permeable paving such as: decomposed granite, pea-gravel and granite blocks in sand setting beds.
